Forearm, Grip and Wrist Training for Armwrestling

By Coach Ray · 18 October 2026

In armwrestling, the athlete who controls the hand usually wins the match. That is why forearm, finger and wrist strength matter more here than in almost any other strength sport.

What to train

  • Fingers and grip: to hold your opponent's hand and stop them taking yours
  • Cupping (wrist flexion): the base of the hook and of most defence
  • Rising: the base of the toproll
  • Pronation and supination: turning the hand over or toward you

Useful tools

A wrist wrench, rolling handles of different sizes, fat grips, a towel and a loading pin or cable cover almost everything.

How to progress

Forearm tendons need time. Add load slowly, keep most sets controlled, and stop if you feel joint pain rather than muscle fatigue.
